Here's what you need to ear candle at home:

2-6 Ear Candles
Ear Oil
Sturdy Paper Plate – cover with foil wrap
Scissors
Bowl of Water
Towel
Lighter or matches

It takes 2 people to ear candle safely. One to receive the ear candling and one to perform it. The person receiving should be lying down on their side with the towel draped over the head and shoulder leaving the ear exposed.

Gather your materials and put on a tray close to where you are going to candle. Check the room for fans, open windows, or other sources of circulation that may affect the candle burning. You need ventilation, but a ceiling fan (for example) will cause too much air to circulate and the candle smoke won't come down to the tip end.

Cut a hole, off center, about the size of a dime in the paper plate. It needs to be big enough for the candle to fit in. Put the ear candle through the hole being careful not to crush the candle. Tip the plate on it's side and light the larger end of the candle. There might be a drip or two as the flame takes hold, so light the candle away from the receiver's head. After the candle is lit, tip the plate so it is horizontal. Place the small end of the candle carefully in the ear canal when smoke comes out the small end. If after 1 minute there is no smoke (it's probably the air circulation in the room) coming out, go ahead and put the candle in the ear. The smoke will come down and do it's job.

Be sure to look at the angle of the ear canal before you start so you can place the candle in the same direction. The candle is properly placed in the ear when there is NO smoke coming out from around the ear. Gently blow around the outside of the ear to move any smoke present and wait to see if more smoke comes out. If it does, CAREFULLY and slowly twist the candle and reposition it until there is no more smoke.

It is normal for the receiver to hear a crackling noise during the session as the moisture in the area is being dried up. Note: If at any time the heat from the candle is uncomfortable STOP IMMEDIATELY! A good candling session should be warm, comfortable and pain free.

Let the ear candle burn. As it burns down- about 1 inch, trim with a scissors above the flame and place the trimmed portion into a glass of water. Let the ear candle burn 3/4 of it's length, being careful not to let the flame touch the plate. When the candle has burned 3/4, gently pull the plate and candle away from the receiver, remove the candle from the plate and extinguish the flame in the bowl of water. Do NOT attempt to blow the flame out! Discard the candle. Do not reuse the burnt candle.

See the Q&A below "Should I candle again?" for information on why you might need to repeat the process.

Repeat above steps on the other ear. Repeat every 3-6 months or weekly during cold, flu and allergy season.

Ear Candle Q&A

Is ear candling a scam?

If the ear candles you have used before were made from paraffin and someone told you all the "gunk" left in the candle afterwards was from your ear, then YES, you were scammed. From what we know, Ear candling dates back to at least Ancient Egypt. There are variations of ear candling used all over the globe. It is recognized in Germany and other countries as a bona fide medical treatment. Generally speaking, natural remedies are inexpensive, so pharmaceuticals and Doctors won't make a fortune from prescribing them. It's easier for Doctors to call it a scam, than lose patients to alternative remedies.

What's the big deal about soy wax?

Beeswax/Soy wax blend leaves far less residue inside the candle than traditional paraffin, thus the candles clog less, allowing more warmth and cleaner smoke to enter the ear canal to aid in softening ear pain and excess wax in the ear. With a beeswax soy wax blend, you get a true result in your candling session because there is virtually no residue from the candle! Beeswax is exceptional but very expensive by itself. Both soy and beeswax are renewable sources for wax and burn completely.

Is it safe to use paraffin ear candles?

DO NOT USE EAR CANDLES MADE OF PARAFFIN. Beware of the Paraffin Scam! Paraffin leaves lots of "gunk" (residue) in the bottom of the candle which many people believe to be ear wax. Paraffin "gunk" is, unfortunately, one of the biggest scams being used to shock people into buying ear candles. With our beeswax soy wax blend, you get a true result in your candling session because there is virtually no residue from the candle!

Do they really work?

That's really up to you. If you were told it "sucks the wax out of your ears" then the answer is NO. If you believe that the individual is responsible for his or her own healing then YES, ear candling works. Most people express relief from ear pain, hearing problems, ringing in the ears, chronic wax build-up, sinus issues and headaches.

Remember, alternative remedies take longer, but cause less damage to the body than invasions from drugs, probes, irrigation, surgery, etc.

Is all that stuff in the tip of the candle from my ear?

No. If your ear candle is made with paraffin (ours are NOT!), 99% of the wax residue is from the ear candle. It's not wax "removal" that makes ear candling such a wonderful alternative remedy. We'll address this further down in the questions and answers, so keep reading! If you are using a paraffin blend candle and you want to know which wax is which, let the candle cool. After it has cooled, squeeze the wax. If it is squishy, it may be mixed with ear wax from your ear. If it is hard, you can be certain that it is all from the ear candle.

How often do I candle my ears?

Common sense is the determining factor. We recommend candling every 3-6 months. During cold, flu and allergy season you can candle weekly. 2-3 candles per ear is normal. I would never use more than 4 candles per ear under any circumstances.

When is ear candling a "no-no"?

If the ear drum is perforated
if there are tubes in the ear,
or if you have any rash or open sores/wounds in or around the outer ear.
Ear Candles will help with ear ache pain, but do NOT reduce infection.
You should seek the advise of a doctor if any of these conditions are present.

I didn't see much wax in the candle after I finished. Should I candle again?

No. That means you are NOT using paraffin ear candles! Ear Candling should be used as maintenance rather than for repair. You should feel a sense of balance after candling. If you feel “heavier” on one side then you shoul repeat the process in the heavier side.

If you are using a paraffin based ear candle then rest assured most, if not all, the wax is from the ear candle! With a 100% Beeswax, or a Beeswax / Soy Wax blend, you should be able to look inside and through the candle without cutting it open. A good ear candling session will give you an immediate sense of clarity, relaxation, and wellbeing --just like a massage! In most cases you won't see anything come out immediately after the session, HOWEVER, if you have excessive wax build-up, you will notice more sloughing out in the 2-3 days afterwards.

If my ears are itchy should I candle them?

No. Itchy ears can be a symptom of scores of issues or it might be as simple as a reaction to the chemicals in your shampoo. Rinse your ears thoroughly each time you shampoo. Or it could be a fungus, yeast, or bacteria.

.

There was _________ stuck on the end of the candle. Did that really come from my ear?

Testimonials have been made about all sorts of things ending up in the ear and being removed with eat candles…. dirt, bugs, beads, sand etc. The ear is built to get rid of foreign materials, and every so often we need to help it along.

After I ear candle there is powder inside the candle and sometimes in my ear. What is it?

Most beeswax candles will produce powder. Our soy wax / beeswax blend will produce a minimal amount of powder but the tip will not get clogged like paraffin candles. Any ear candle containing beeswax will produce a larger accumulation of powder residue than plain paraffin. When you finish the session, use a q-tip dipped in hydrogen peroxide and gently swab the outer portions of the ear to collect any powdery residue you are uncomfortable with.

Any natural material is NOT going to be 100% predictable, so expect some variations to occur from time to time.
