Muladhara: Where Your Roots Are 💓🌱

Today we are talking about the first of the seven main chakras, the root chakra, sometimes called the base chakra. (Chakras are energy centers in the body, which start at the base of the spine and move up to the very top of your head... If you haven't yet, make sure you read our blog post introducing the basics of chakras!)

Muladhara is the Sanskrit name for this first chakra. The name means something like "root support" and this center is associated with the most basic of human needs in an earthly sense: safety and security. When we talk about the root chakra, we often talking about "grounding." What is grounding? Well, in simplest terms, grounding refers to being properly connected to the Earth. The Earth has its own natural energy, and when we are properly "grounded," we feel centered and balanced. Because our root chakra provides the foundation for the rest of us, our life, our emotions, etc., it is particularly connected to how grounded we are. When the root chakra is out of balance or blocked, is creates a problem for the rest of the chakra system, because it is our foundation.

When energy is flowing through the root chakra properly, we feel SAFE, SECURE, and STABLE... not only physically, but also emotionally. If our life is full of fear, anxiety, and the need to escape, these are classic signs that there is an issue with the root chakra. Physical symptoms that are sometimes associate with the root chakra include the organs surrounding the tailbone, and everything on the body below it.

Because the root chakra is associated with being grounded, one way to properly align it is to spend time outside. Walking around barefoot, feeling the grass beneath our feet, closing our eyes and smelling the dirt and trees: these are all ways to ground yourself. A healthy first chakra is also one that belongs to someone who knows they have everything they truly need to survive. In meditation, remind yourself that you are SAFE, SECURE, and STABLE. You have all you need. You are at peace with the earth, and you have nothing to fear.

Red and Black Stones

There are also various tools that you can use to become more in touch with your root chakra. One we have already mentioned is the element associated with this chakra: EARTH. Take time to be outside, sit in the grass and feel the pull of gravity. Walk barefoot, find a forest and enjoy the quiet presence of the trees. The root chakra is also associated with our sense of SMELL. Smell the dirt beneath your feet, the leaves and trees, wet grass, and anything else you notice. Essential oils can also be useful for activating the root chakra using the sense of smell... specific oils associated with the root chakra are earthy, woodsy oils, like vetiver, patchouli, cedarwood, sandalwood, cypress, rosewood, clove, ginger, and black pepper.

The color RED is important to remember when working with the root chakra. Things that are colored with rich reds and deep blacks, have the vitality, strength, and sense of grounding in their energy that the root chakra thrives on. Because of this, red foods will naturally be healthy for the root chakra: apples, tomatoes, cherries, etc. Healthy foods are great for your body in general: foods that are fresh, not processed, that are grown without the use of chemicals and radiations. The body is healthier, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, when it eats well!

Lastly, people often use gemstones and crystals when working with their chakras, because stones are natural and contain their own energies. These energy's vibrations correspond to our own energies at different levels, and can therefore be used to address the different chakras. Crystals that are red and black in color are particularly helpful for the root chakra: garnet, ruby, red jasper, tourmaline, obsidian, and many more! Wear these stones, carry them with you, or meditate with them in order to address the root chakra!
